See you at HyVolution!

Pyrocontrole groupe Chauvin-Arnoux sera présent pour la nouvelle édition d’HyVolution du 1er au 2 février prochains au Paris Expo Porte de Versailles.

Pyrocontrole, a company in the Chauvin-Arnoux Group, will be present at the new edition of HyVolution on February 1st and 2nd, 2023, at Paris Expo Porte de Versailles (France). This will provide an opportunity for Pyrocontrole to reveal its new offering dedicated to the entire hydrogen value chain.

The ambition of HyVolution is to become the main event for the hydrogen sector in France and Europe. In addition to Pyrocontrole, the event will bring together nearly 200 exhibitors and all the stakeholders for two days of discussions and debates in the presence of the main European leaders in the sector.

Alongside its physical organization, HyVolution will be developing a digital platform too. New online services will be proposed on a web platform and via the HyVolution Connect application. This will help them to reach a wider audience while fostering contact between professionals.

EDF and Pyrocontrole: a partnership for the future

K1 and K3-qualified Pyrocontrole temperature sensors will equip the future Flamanville 3 EPR nuclear reactor. Since the 1970s, Pyrocontrole has been acknowledged by contractors and users as offering high performance in the field of qualified temperature probes for the nuclear industry.

Today at Pyrocontrole, they have built up considerable know-how regarding these products as they are constantly faced with the difficulties inherent to this range of highly technical products. The numerous safety constraints are liable to evolve and the best possible level must always be achieved.

The commercial and technical follow-up needs to be particularly effective because the implications for the contractors are strategic: Pyrocontrole's temperature sensors help to ensure that our customers' nuclear reactors operate correctly, so they have to function without fail!

To maintain the demanding level required, you need complete control of the qualification, production and control processes. The documentary structure, traceability of the procurements and manufacturing and inspection operations, and the stability of our teams are key elements in our industrial policy.

"Nuclear safety" comprises all the steps taken at all stages, from design, manufacture of the equipment, nuclear plant construction and operation to the definitive shutdown of an installation. The purpose of this is to ensure safe operation, anticipate incidents and limit their effects. The concept of safety is a fundamental element in the requirements covering our temperature sensors for nuclear environments. There is a genuine culture of safety. This safety concept is structured according to several points.

1 – All the personnel involved in producing "nuclear-qualified products" must be made aware of the "nuclear safety" aspects.

2 – The design must respect the required construction rules: RCCE and RCCM codes.

3 – Some purchasing or manufacturing operations are identified as ACQ (Action Concerning Quality) and are the subject of highly-formalized monitoring.

Qualification of the equipment is a crucial preliminary process. The goal of qualification campaign is to test the equipment's behaviour during an accident (e.g. earthquake) after first artificially ageing the equipment. "Qualification Summaries" are then drafted after these qualification campaigns.

The "Reference File" describes the precise conditions for production of the equipment covered by the qualification campaigns. Any equipment delivered subsequently must be traceable to this "Reference File". There are 4 levels of qualification : K1, K2, K3 and NC (from the lowest to the highest).

Will the energy crisis end in 2023?

The main message from the International Energy Agency (IEA): "Avoid gas shortages in Europe"

After energy prices peaked at the beginning of Autumn 2022, the French government forecasted a difficult winter with possible energy restrictions, and the Prime Minister strongly encouraged people to act daily to save energy, while inviting businesses to implement drastic good practices to limit their consumption. How do things now stand at the beginning of 2023? As a result of the conflict in Ukraine, Europe has decided to stop using Russian gas. Although the price per megawatt-hour of gas has fallen significantly to the level before the war in Ukraine, it nevertheless remains much higher than the twenty or so euros per megawatt-hour which we had been accustomed to for years. Is there a trend indicating a return to normal energy prices?

It's difficult for economists to define their position and achieve a consensus because energy prices depend on so many different factors, such as geopolitical events, market speculation, weather, the levels of reserves, etc. The energy crisis has had the merit of shuffling the political cards. Europe's dependence on Russian gas became a hot topic, leading to a common strategy based on the necessity of diverisfying our sources of supply and focusing on alternate energy sources.

After a period in the shadows, this has once again put the Nuclear sector in the spotlight. It is seeing significant development worldwide with new-generation  nuclear power plants in France and China, which is launching an experimental fast neutron reactor.  Similarly, to avoid power cuts, Germany and South Korea are suspending the planned closures of their nuclear plants. Germany and China are also reversing their plans to abandon coal, launched to combat climate change.

In 2022, the major focus was on hydrogen, in gaseous or liquid form, a clean but expensive energy soirce which needs significant investment for transport and storage.

Solar energy will continue to expand, increasing demand for renewable energy (excluding hydroelectric) by 11%. Hydroelectricity has fallen back slightly to around 3% due to water shortages and doubts regarding its genuine ecological virtues.

The trend is therefore to capitalize on the consumption habits developed in recent months in terms of restraint while continuing to seek diversification of our energy sources with solar power, heat pumps and liquefied natural gas (LNG).
